Therapy Readiness

5 things to ask before your first counseling session

These questions help you evaluate therapist fit, care style, and expected outcomes before treatment begins.

The first session sets direction for everything that follows. Asking clear questions early helps clients choose the right clinician and begin with realistic expectations.

  1. What experience do you have with my specific concern and context?
  2. Which treatment methods do you use, and why are they a fit for my goals?
  3. How will progress be measured over time?
  4. What are your booking, payment, rescheduling, and cancellation policies?
  5. What should I expect in the first 2-4 sessions and beyond?

Strong answers should be clear, specific, and collaborative. If expectations remain vague, ask follow-up questions until you understand the process.
